Install Animara

About five minutes each. No YAML, no HACS. Your rooms and devices are found by themselves.

The easy way: one link, nothing to copy

We made this way especially for our customers, so anyone can install Animara in a few minutes, without files, folders or add ons. Every screen keeps its own copy, so it keeps working even when the internet is down.

  1. Copy the link for what you have

Use one link. The dashboards link already brings the icons with it.

  2. Add it in Home Assistant

Open Settings > Dashboards, the menu (three dots, top right), Resources (or open it directly: my.home-assistant.io), Add resource
Paste the link, choose JavaScript module, Create
Refresh the page (on a phone, close and reopen the app).

  3. Use it

Icons: edit a dashboard, Add card, search Animara, pick the device and paste your Full Pack key once. Dashboards: Settings > Dashboards > Add dashboard, pick Animara Home or Animara Showroom (with Animara Glass: Animara Float or Animara Glow, add both if you like), open it from the side menu and paste your key once. It builds itself from your rooms.

Make it yours: play, move, change

Every change below takes a few taps and is saved for the whole home: every phone, tablet and wall screen. Nothing here can break anything, so go ahead and play.

  1. Your icons, inside the cards you already use

Animara shows its live icons in your Mushroom, Bubble Card, tiles and entity rows by itself. The first time, a small note asks you to choose:

    1. Keep Animara icons: keep the live icons
    2. Use my old icons: go back to the icons you had
  2. Missed the note? Back to your old icons

On the dashboard you want to change:

    1. Tap the pencil ✏️ Edit dashboard
    2. Tap Add card
    3. Search for Animara and open it
    4. Set Animara icons in all cards on this dashboard to Off
    5. Tap Cancel
You don't need to save the card, the setting is already kept

Only this dashboard changes. To get the live icons back, do the same and choose On.

  3. Pick another look for a device

    1. Open the settings of any Animara card
    2. Tap Change a device's icon and pick the device
    3. Choose one of the three animated options
    4. Choose Only this device or All devices of this type

Changed your mind? Choose Back to automatic.

  4. Move, remove or resize tiles (Animara Home)

    1. Tap the pencil at the top ✏️
    2. To move a tile: press and hold it, drag it, let go
    3. To remove a tile from a room: tap its small minus
The device itself is not touched
    4. To make a tile bigger or smaller: tap its size button
    5. To add a device: tap + Add at the end of the room
    6. Tap Done to save, or Cancel to undo everything
  5. Change a tile's icon, or what a tap does

    1. Tap the pencil at the top ✏️
    2. Tap the tile once
    3. Pick one of three icons, or tap More icons to search them all
    4. Choose where it applies: This tile, This room or All like it
    5. In the same window, choose what a tap does: on and off, open controls, or nothing
    6. Tap Done
  6. A light with two zones (Animara Float and Glow)

    1. A light with two zones, like a kitchen island, is one tile that shows both zone colours
    2. One tap turns both zones on or off
    3. Press and hold the tile: a window opens with each zone's own switch and dimmer
  7. Your scenes, scripts and shades

    1. Scenes and scripts you made in Home Assistant appear in their room by themselves. The ones without a room get their own Scenes page
    2. Press and hold a shade or shutter: a drag bar sets the exact height, and every script or scene that moves it gets its own button
  8. Open Home Assistant's menu

    1. Tap the menu button at the top left of the dashboard
    2. On a phone you can also swipe in from the left edge of the screen
  9. Make it the first screen

    1. Open the menu and tap Settings
    2. Tap Dashboards
    3. On the row of Animara Home or Animara Showroom, tap the three dots at the end of the row
    4. Tap Set as default

Home Assistant now opens straight on it, on every device. To switch back, do the same on another dashboard.

  10. Start fresh any time

    1. Added new rooms or devices in Home Assistant? Tap + Add in a room to add them
    2. Or tap the pencil, then Rebuild, to make the whole dashboard again from your rooms. Your devices are never changed

The manual way (for experienced users)

Prefer to keep the files inside your own Home Assistant? Everything is in your download.

1. The icons (Full Pack or Complete)

  1. Copy the card into Home Assistant

From your Full Pack (or Complete) zip, copy home-assistant/animara-card.js into the www folder of your Home Assistant configuration, so you have /config/www/animara-card.js. If www does not exist yet, create it and restart Home Assistant once.

  2. Add it as a resource

Settings > Dashboards, the menu (three dots), Resources, Add resource: URL /local/animara-card.js?v=1.0.0, type JavaScript module, Create. Refresh the browser.

  3. Add an Animara card and your key

Edit any dashboard, Add card, search Animara. Pick the device and the icon (or Automatic) from the lists, paste your license key once and Save. Using Animara Home or Showroom? They draw these icons for you, so this card is optional.

2. Animara Home and Animara Showroom

  1. Copy one file into Home Assistant

Copy animara-dashboards.js (in the Complete zip it is in the dashboards folder) into the www folder of your Home Assistant configuration, so you have /config/www/animara-dashboards.js. Use the File editor or Studio Code Server add on, a Samba share or SSH. If www does not exist yet, create it and restart Home Assistant once. For the dashboard in your own language without internet, also copy the dashboards/i18n folder to /config/www/animara/i18n (optional: online it loads by itself).

  2. Add it as a resource

Open Settings > Dashboards, the menu (three dots, top right), Resources, Add resource: URL /local/animara-dashboards.js?v=0.38.8, type JavaScript module, Create. Refresh the browser (on a phone, close and reopen the app).

  3. Add the dashboard

Settings > Dashboards > Add dashboard, pick Animara Home or Animara Showroom, give it a name and an icon, Create. Open it from the side menu.

  4. Paste your license key once

The first time you open it, paste the license key from your purchase email and tap Unlock. Only a Home Assistant administrator can do this. It is saved with the dashboard, so every phone, tablet and wall screen in your home is unlocked.

  5. It builds itself

Your rooms come from Home Assistant Areas and your devices from the entities in them, so the dashboard looks like your home on the first open, with no YAML. A device that is not in any area still shows up on the pages by type (Lights, Climate, Media and so on); give it an area in Home Assistant and it moves into its room. Tap the pencil (top right) to move, rename, resize or change the icon of any tile; it is saved for the whole home.
